Matthew Barney belt - piece from collection "Imperfect perfection"

Individual. Something indivisible.
Unity situated in the centre of equilibrium between one world and another. Compromise between the masculine and the feminine. Perfect state of existence. Continuous stimulation.

The complexity pushed to its own limits through which Matthew Barney approaches, interprets, processes and exposes a subject was an aspect that caught my attention. Referred to as an avant-garde artist, with works in sculpture, photography, drawing and also film, the complexity of his art is also achieved through an intensive exploration of the multiple ways of artistic expression. Matthew Barney’s personal emblem, The Field Emblem, which is also present in his films, stands out as a powerful sign which encompasses the symbolism behind his artistic decisions. The regaining of the primary state of equilibrium, but also the explanation of its loss could be some of the many aspects implied by it. The positioning of the jewel which has the Field Emblem attached to it, was not randomly chosen. The middle of the human body is a zero point, a state of equilibrium sustained vertically but, at the same time, challenged by the line of the horizon. A belt having this emblem as a central attachment is what seemed to be the ideal accessory for representing the idea of individuality and power. I considered the insertion of pearl powder to be like a breath of purity, through which the integrity of the symbol is elegantly highlighted. The fact that the pearls are grinded is a suggestion that, although something powerful can easily be brought to pieces, as long as the small parts which once composed it have a separate existence, the consistency of all elements involved is significantly amplified by their dispersion.
